Description
NK Plus+® is a dietary supplement based on a complex consisting of F.E.S.M.® (Fermented Extract from Shiitake), traditionally used in Japan as a beneficial ingredient to improve the body’s immune defence and balance (dry extract titrated with alpha-glucan 10%) and wasabi (freeze-dried extract from the roots of Wasabia japonica), known as horseradish, which neutralises carcinogens and has antibacterial, antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties.

F.E.S.M.® (Fermented Extract from Shiitake – Lentinula Edodes)
The medicinal properties of some mushroom species have been known for thousands of years and their use is a long tradition, mainly in the Far East. In Japan, for example, they are licensed as a cure for stomach cancer. The constituents of mushrooms: glycans – have been identified as bioactive constituents. These polysaccharides are well known in the literature as modulators of the biological response, stimulating the immune system; they are also used to treat cancer in combination with cytotoxic chemotherapeutic drugs.
Not all mushrooms are the same (and neither are all glycans). They need to be carefully selected and tested to determine their beneficial properties, taking into account their different abilities to be absorbed and used by the body where needed (bioavailability). In fact, it is very important to keep in mind the distinction between “food” and “active ingredient”.
F.E.S.M. ® is derived from the mycelial filaments of a mushroom mixture (Lentinula edodes – Shiitake). The fungal colonies are then cultivated in a bath in the main culture for a further forty-five days. F.E.S.M.® is obtained by a patented process of cultivation, enzymatic digestion, sterilisation, concentration and lyophilisation. Among the main ingredients of F.E.S.M.® is also partially acetylated alpha-glucan, known for its beneficial effects on the immune system.
One of the advantages of fermentation is that it removes nutrients from the body in a more easily digestible form. F.E.S.M.® has a molecular weight of only 5000 Daltons. Many mushroom extracts have a molecular weight of hundreds of thousands of Daltons. The reduced molecular weight increases nutrient absorption and bioavailability. All this also means that the powerful nutrients in F.E.S.M.® are quickly assimilated by white blood cells to be used immediately to destroy cancer cells or strengthen the immune system’s defences.
The result is unique and cannot be found in nature with other mushroom extracts or mixtures. In the field of oncology, F.E.S.M.® has been successfully used to demonstrate effective modulation in the treatment of liver, breast, prostate, gastrointestinal tumours, multiple myeloma, and precancerous conditions such as cervical dysplasia.
Wasabi (freeze-dried extract from the roots of Wasabia japonica)
After a thorough examination and extraction process, the root is lyophilised to preserve all the active ingredients.
Wasabi is a member of the Brassicaceae family (which also includes broccoli, cauliflower and Brussels sprouts); all parts of the wasabi plant are used, but it is the rhizome that contains the highest concentration of active substances from which the pharmacological properties are derived.
This component contains isothiocyanates, phytochemicals which neutralise carcinogens, reduce their harmful effects and promote the release of other substances that fight them. It has antibacterial, antiseptic, hepatodysoxicating and anti-inflammatory properties.
Preamble
Shiitake mushrooms (like other oriental mushrooms) have been used in traditional oriental medicine for centuries. About 30 years ago, some Japanese researchers carefully observed their effects on humans, especially in terms of improving the general immune system, supporting and overcoming some degenerative pathologies. At the molecular level, with the development of increasingly sophisticated identification and tracking systems, they have partially elucidated the mechanisms of action. This extract contains alpha-glucans, a group of highly reactive substances that are capable of significantly ‘waking up’ our immune system, which for various reasons is ‘dysfunctional’ or weakened. By increasing the production and activity of natural killer cells, F.E.S.M.® acts on the immune system by stimulating natural killer (NK) lymphocytes.
They are a lesser known cell population (even from medical research) compared to the better known B- and T-lymphocytes, but they are the most important white blood cell fighters in some diseases, including tumours.
Natural killer (NK) cells, what they are and how they work.
Natural killer cells are some of the cells in our body’s immune system. They are part of the so-called innate immune system (together with macrophages and dendritic cells), or the part of the immune system whose function is to “protect the body first” from pathogens without primary stimulation. The innate immune system is in contrast to the adaptive immune system, which consists of B and T cells that only function when properly stimulated by the body. NK cells work against any pathogen, including bacteria and tumours. Since they do not stimulate the adaptive immune system (because they are actually cells of our own body that have not been found to be harmful), they are the only cells of the immune system that act directly against neoplasms.
They make up about 10% of the cells in the immune system and have a very short lifespan compared to other cells. Until a few years ago, they were not isolated from other lymphocytes, and today many studies are being carried out to get to know them better and to discover their potential in the fight against cancer.
