The roots of Lion’s Mane come from Asian culture. Based on research, it has an anti-inflammatory effect, is rich in antioxidants and has an immune-boosting effect. Lion’s Mane is a mushroom, the consumption of which supports the work of the brain, increases the total energy level, improves memory and concentration. This mushroom is probably the best-known natural nootropic. The proteins in lion’s mane support the production of new nerve cells and strengthen the existing ones. In addition, it has been found to be one of the best natural prebiotics.
Nutritional information:
Lion’s mane (Hericium erinaceus) contains valuable ingredients such as protein 42.5%), carbohydrates (60.95%), crude fiber (7.81%), fats (7.9%), ash (8.9%) and hemp. There are 17 different combinations in mycelium and fruiting body (Egwim, 2011).
The essential ones available are threonine, methionine, valine, histidine, isoleucine, arginine, leucine, phenylalanine and lysine where; common ones include cysteine, tyrosine, alanine, glutamic acid, aspartic acid, serine, proline, and glycine. Approximately 29 micro and macro elements are present in the lion’s mane mushroom.
Lion’s mane contains varying amounts of minerals, i.e. sodium (157 mg), potassium (29163 mg), phosphorus (6121 mg), zinc (59 mg), magnesium (1166 mg), copper (13 mg), manganese (11 mg) and calcium (395 mg) (Nachshol et al., 2014).
Every day new ‘super foods’ appear that work wonders, even if they support health, they are usually not as wonderful as promised. It is surprising to see that the promised health-supporting properties of Lion’s Mane are also proven to work.
This mushroom has long been used to develop mental capacity, clarity of thought and production, improve nerve function and promote nerve cells. It is also used for age-related memory loss and reduced mental capacity.
So what is this lion’s mane?
Lion’s Mane is a unique-looking mushroom that grows on dead or dying trees in various parts of the world. It is also found in North American forests and can be found under the name Bearded Tooth or Yamabushitake in Japanese. You can also find it on store shelves under the name Pom-Pom. Lion’s mane is very different from the common cap-and-foot fungus. The fruit body looks like a snowball, with long “fangs” that fall down. These “fangs” act as fungal ends that the fungus uses to disperse the spores.
Medicinal mushrooms have been used for centuries and have a place in the long history of Chinese medicine.
People who use Lion’s Mane as a dietary supplement have experienced improved memory, focus, cognition, and mental clarity.
Research shows that the secret of lion’s mane is its ability to induce the production of the Nerve Growth Factor (NGF). NGF, which is produced by the human brain, is involved in the protection and production of neurons. Not many other things have been found in the natural world that can stimulate NGF production. This is why the lion’s mane is of such interest to scientists.
Anti-cancer effect
Lion’s mane has shown the potential to fight various types of cancer cells. The antioxidant properties of lion’s mane play an important role in cancer prevention. Laboratory studies have established that Lion’s Mane extract is a potential therapeutic aid in the treatment of leukemia. In animal experiments, the extracts have given positive results in the fight against liver, intestinal and stomach cancer. These findings are promising, but still require further research.
Supports the immune system
The lion’s mane mushroom strengthens the immune system, in part because it lowers inflammation and prevents oxidation. Studies show that lion’s mane enhances intestinal immunity. Also, in another study, it is true that the proteins in lion’s mane stimulate the growth of good bacteria in the gut, which strengthen the immune system.
Anxiety and depression
In a 2015 study on mice that consumed lion’s mane were found to repeat less depressive-like behavior and blood tests also showed reduced depression. The researchers hinted at the mushroom’s anti-inflammatory properties. In a study conducted in Japan, women with special health concerns were studied – menopause symptoms, poor quality sleep, etc. They were given cookies with lion’s mane powder or placebo cookies for 4 weeks. Those who consumed cookies with lion’s mane noticed reduced irritability.
Cognitive abilities
Lion’s mane mushroom has been observed to stimulate cognitive abilities. Lion’s mane supplements have shown good results in studies in improving object memory and recognition memory. Researchers have concluded that this mushroom has the potential to prevent and treat diseases that lower cognitive abilities, such as Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s and dementia. In an older Japanese study, adults between the ages of 50 and 80 were found to have decreased cognitive abilities. They were given a mushroom extract daily for 16 weeks, which increased the group’s cognitive ability compared to the placebo group. These readings dropped when participants stopped consuming the mushroom.
Heart health
The heart-healthy properties of lion’s mane are primarily found in animal subjects. However, studies have shown cholesterol-lowering effects.
Diabetes
Stabilizing blood sugar is key to managing diabetes. Studies have shown decreased blood sugar levels after 4 weeks of consuming lion’s mane extract. In a 2015 study, rats that had consumed lion’s mane for 6 weeks had improved antioxidant activity, decreased nerve pain and decreased blood sugar levels.
Restoration of the nervous system
A damaged nervous system plays an important role in the health of the whole body. There are studies that state that Lion’s Mane mushroom stimulates the growth of nerve cells and faster healing.
Health of the digestive system
Lion’s mane supports digestion by reducing inflammation, which is beneficial for those suffering from inflammatory bowel disease. The mushroom also increases immune activity and stimulates the growth of good bacteria in the gut. Based on laboratory studies, lion’s mane has an antibacterial effect that can improve digestion. The ability of lion’s mane to prevent stomach ulcers has also been studied.
Wound healing
Lion’s mane has also been found to have the ability to heal skin wounds. In tests on rats, faster healing was noted when lion’s mane extract was applied locally to wounds. This phenomenon needs further research. There is one endless discovery in the mushroom world!
